Gangnam can be an excellent Seoul base for the right itinerary, but it is not automatically the most efficient location for a first visit focused on the historic and central parts of the city.
Choose Gangnam when a large share of your plans are south of the Han River, when you prefer that style of neighborhood or when your hotel value is clearly better there. Choose a more central or western base when most first-trip sights sit elsewhere.
